Kombucha

Welcome to my world of scoby and her kombucha 🫖 👽

I wanted to find out if scoby can be happy even being a gypsy. And the answer is clearly yes and so we travel and explore. Awesomeness!

What is Kombucha ?

Kombucha is a fizzy sweet-and-sour drink made with tea. Many people say it helps relieve or prevent a variety of health problems, everything from hair loss to cancer and AIDS. There is little scientific evidence to back up all these claims, but some elements of the drink may be good for you 🥰.Kombucha has been around for nearly 2.000 years. If you ask google it will tell you that Kombucha was first brewed in China and then spread to Japan and Russia. It became popular in Europe in the early 20 th century. Sales in Southern Africa are on the rise because of its reputation as a health and energy drink. But as the quality and taste differ from bottle to bottle it might be worthwile for you to check out if you maybe just start brewing your own Kombucha.

Kombucha Health Benefits

Kombucha friends say Kombucha helps your digestion, rids your body of toxins, and boosts your energy. It’s also said to boost your immune system, help you lose weight, ward off high blood pressure and heart disease and prevent cancer. But there is honestly not a lot of evidence to support these claims. But anyway, I still love it ❤️.

Claims about kombuchas power to aid digestion come from the fact that fermentation makes probiotics. And believe it or not, probiotics help with diarrhea and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and they may even strengthen your immune system.

Kombucha bacteria includes lactic- acid bacteria, which can work as a probiotic. Kombucha also contains a healthy dose of B vitamins.

Kombucha Ingredients

The basic ingredients of kombucha are yeast, sugar, and black tea. The mix is set aside for a week or more. During that time, bacteria and acids form in the drink, as well as a small amount of alcohol. This process is known as fermentation, and it’s similar to how cabbage is preserved as sauerkraut or kimchi or how milk is turned into yoghurt.

These bacteria and acids form a film on top of the liquid called a SCOBY (symbiotic colony of bacteria and yeast). The SCOBY is absolutely necessary to ferment the tea and sugar and turn it into you homemade kombucha.

Kombucha Risks

Making kombucha involves letting bacteria grow in a liquid you are going to drink. Many of the bacteria are considered probiotics, but if it’s not prepared properly, it can grow harmful bacteria or mold. Thats why we need to make sure that all surfaces, container, ingredients and tools are clean as well as your hands and that you treat your scoby with love and attention. Please try to use only glass and stainless steel – avoid plastic and metal.

Where to find your scoby ?

You can check on Instagram if I am somewhere in the area where you stay and you can take over your own scoby from me.

If I am in the same country as you, shipping of your scoby might be an option.

And you can check some facebook groups about your area and see if someone is prepared to share or sell you a scoby with starter liquid to start your own Kombucha.
